As I've stated elsewhere, I don't think it is America's responsibility to end world hunger. However, I do strongly encourage individuals to do what they can. Many of us feel powerless to help, but there is at least one small thing you can do besides simply donate money to a charity: There is this site:
FreeRice
Basically, it's a vocabulary builder that donates 20 grains of rice for every word you get correct, and the difficulty goes up or down depending upon words you get correct. They can do this because of the advertising banner at the bottom of the page that pays for the rice. Over time, and with enough people, this can make at least some impact. I guess the site fed about a million people in its first 6 months. Plus, it helps build your vocabulary. It's one of the few examples of a win-win situation for everybody.
I guess it takes about 400 grains of rice to feed a person for a day, on average.
So far, I haven't been above level 45 without cheating. (:
