I am not sure, but the root problem is the giant unemployment rate. In many Roma and Sinti settlements a rate around 80% unemployment exists.
The Roma and Sinti are the largest European minority today. And the whole issue is a real problem. Beneath the ghettoisation is also the extrem high analphabetic rate and the generally bad access to education.
The largest part of them really has to live as underdogs. And no need to say that they completely lack perspectives. Although I have heard already from several platforms organized by engaged Romas themselves to sovle the root problems, get the youth of them educated. Its the sole possible solution.

So after being a "thorn" in the side of the people in the area for decades, hell even Hitler tried to kill them off, the EU is now starting to try and engage these people. Right?
Actually, it sounds more like a fear of the gypsies because of a cultural difference, you know kinda like when someone speaks Arabic, people go into a panic.

Well if they are the cause of a lot of crime then I could see why they would want to get rid of them. Kind of like when NYC was cleaned up.

A website about and by Roma (gypsies) in the Czech Republic including the story of the Czech city Usti nad Labem , which wanted to seal the local roma quarter off by building a wall a couple of years ago..

What should Europe do? You can't clean 8 million people from European surface. You know how that is called, and this time I remark that I definitely do not believe you mean that is an option.
So what are you thinking should be done?

Actually you could not be more wrong.
The EU is the sole European entity that supports their cause somehow. And as long as the new member states had to do something to improve the whole situation of the Roma and Sintis in order to get green light to join, quite something has been achieved.
But now those efforts sleep away again. And even though the EU shall take care that minority rights are protected all over Europe in theory, Brussels has damn few real competences on the minorities policies. Its national competence. And thats the reason why few care in the affected member states anymore.
The sole postive point I could come up with is that from time to time one can read all over Europe in newspapers about the misery of the Roma and Sinti.

They are subjects to the rule of law like anyone else. So the are thrown into jail for the same crimes also other citizens "enjoy" living on states cost for.
Apart from the fact that making stricter laws just for Romas is highly immoral and unethically it would also cause the question where to put them all into jail?
