I guess this is a phantom discussion on the french part and mostly supposed to provide a strawman argument against Turkeys entry in the EU.
" If they canīt even cope with their past....."
The Turks are certainly right to point out contradictions in the European and especially the french position.
France has not yet apologized for its colonial wars and especially the one in Algeria, which killed hundreds of thousands.
Germany has refused a sincere apology for the "Herrero war" ( the quote by the development minister is not an apology and a single voice)

in its former colony Namibia where the largest tribe was almost erased , with an argument sounding surprisngly similar to that of many Turks. "Nobody is alive anymore who had any position then and the modern Germany is not responsible for crimes during the empire". If Germany is claiming that for itself why not Turkey ? Letīs first clean our own doorstep.
And Armenian intellectuals in Turkey have been asking how should they possibly be arguing against limits on free speech in Turkey when France is doing the same.....
