EU petition: Take controll! For a democratic EU

A really interesting project is being launched currently basing on the initiative of dozens of NGO's and civil associations.

You might know that the EU constitution would have included a passage introducing EU wide petitions. As this constitution is more than uncertain to become reality, active citizens have now launched a petition on themselves. This petition is for the legal right of EU-petition, independently from the question if a Constitution comes or not. The reason behind is that only public pressure, like the one from a petition will move the politicians on EU level to make it binding law.

If the initiative would be successful it would lead to create the law enable EU petitions with more than 1 mio signatures from at least 4 member states to be binding for the Commission. Binding in that way that it has to prepare an legal initiative basing on the petition that will be issued to the Council and the Parliament.

This initiative for more direct democracy in Europe is supported by many well known NGO's and for example also students organisations, as well as European MP's from the left and the right.

Take Control - Ways to democracy in Europe

I wish the best for its success.
