What many european opponents of a turkish EU membership who use this as ammunition for their case fail to see is that reactionary forces in the turkish political and justice system are counting on exactly that. Turkish radical nationalists reject an EU-membership about as fiercely as many Europeans and Pamuk was choosen because it was clear his trial would recieve attention abroad and would influence public opinion negatively. Civil rights activists, minorities etc. are actually among the strongest supporters of Turkey joining the EU and those in the union who want to refuse entry by pointing to the human rights sector are actually sacrificing these people by playing the game of their enemies.
So many european conservatives and many turkish nationalists have something in common.
For the rest i still have to think of a response..
