Well, the US will just ensure that those CIA agents never go to Germany again. No CIA agents will be arrested over this.

I am not sure if the Government has already issued the warrant. But there is another case running in Italy as well.

You know, the CIA was very motivated and active in Europe. The European governments are not very keen on these trials though, as it could get very nasty for them as well, but what shall I say... long lives the independent justice.

Of course the US would more likely nuke us before those CIA agents would be ever arrested in Europe, but the important point is that there are real trials gaining momentum in Germany and Italy. I see a realistic chance that the agents get convicted in absence as at least in the Italian case there are pretty nice evidences available.

If nothing else, it will at least take away the possibility of the US to simply deny it, without totally loosing any creditibility. Their denial stands than against a courts judgement of a western nation. I would not wonder if that would have even a backlash as far as to America. At least as long on that continent still some people live who have not abandoned the principles of civil liberties and the rule of law.

Although the US will never extradite the agents, it will make things harder. They won't be able to send those particular agents to Europe for fear of their being arrested.

Well, with a new identity that might be possible, but I really do not believe the CIA might risk it.

Where I see the benefit out of those trials is that it has the potential to become very uncomfortable, for both the US and the European "torture appeasers" that helped the US at its dirty business. You can not discard foundings made by a court, like the US and others like to do normally. These trials if they really can start through, will be in the news for months. It will a terrible pain in the ass for the affected and remind them that they can save themselves the empty phrases of human rights, freedom and rule of law. Every idiot could point to those cases then.

The whole propaganda is already today a farce, but with such trials making substantial progress it becomes a proven farce. And if the US would disagree with my view, they would see those cases a bit more relaxed and not make that pressure on governments to stop them.

In Germany that is still work in progress, true.

In Italy, they are already further. There its not about CIA aliases anymore. The Italian prosecutors have the real identities and credit card nummers of the accused people. There can not be much doubt that they worked for the CIA. I mean they relied at least heavily on CIA resources that was only used by CIA agents.

Of course I do hope that the prosecutors in Germany could get as far as well.

Well, to my knowledge at least the Italians know the real identities of the people concerned. Partially because not all intelligence operatives were too clever ( for example using personal credit cards) and seemed to forget that the Europeans have intelligence agencies as well.
Most likely none of them will ever have to appear in court. But I suppose this is meant as a political signal. At least certain parts of the world aren´t lawless areas for the CIA.....
