France tried to join the British Commonwealth

France and UK considered 1950s 'merger' | The Guardian | Guardian Unlimited

And even would have accepted the Queen of England as monarch!

This was back in 1956, but still, pretty fascinating. If Eurosocialist back in USPOL finds out about this he'll have a coronary.

This is amazing yes. But, still, it was the point of view of one minister...

I don't know why that one guy wanted to do it, but he would never have sold it the French people.

Well, I don't know. France and the UK have that weird relationship.
France VS UK (rugby) are always interesting
UK vs France (football) => the same
We have this Entente Cordiale...

French people eat frogs, are not welcoming the Brits in Paris ^^... but the British eat strange food, always talk about the wether, and invented cricket with the aim that French don't understand the rules... and the UK won the Olympics 2012.

No one really cared, until we realised Paris might win. Then we went all out to get it!

I thought you would have picked up in a few mistakes on this thread, Brother Oz.

UK and French merger? HA!

Even a yank could see the potential problems with that lineup...

As far as I've been told, the British and the French never really got along.

Such as? There are, but nothing important. You mean like:

She's also the Queen of Scotland (and possibly still the Queen of Northern Ireland, but I'm not sure about that). Not that anyone there cares, which is fair enough.

The UK teams very rarely play. Which is good, since they're rubbish. The English, Scottish and Welsh teams all have their own styles of play, and they don't go together well.

Unlike England, France or The Netherlands, the Kings and Queens of this land held no sovereignty over the land. They were monarchs of the people.
Sorry, I am not sure what you mean by this. Surely that would mean they would be the Monarch of the Scottish, so the current Queen would be the Queen of the Scottish, which really makes no difference.
