Trial For Insulting Ataturk

A Turkish writer was acquitted on Tuesday of a charge of “insulting” the nation’s revered founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, but attempts to ease the country’s draconian laws curbing free speech appear to be failing.

Ipek Calislar is one of dozens of writers, including the Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk, prosecuted in recent months at the insistence of nationalists enraged by what they perceive as attacks on Turkey’s founding principles instigated by liberal reforms aimed at getting the country into the European Union.

Public--I am sure there is another story here and would like to know it.

Well, modernization of Turkey and secular bases of the country were made by Ataturk.. As soon as Ataturk is kept as taboo, secularism and modernity will remain undebatebale in Turkey... so islamists want to destroy that spirit using free speech as a tool and now ironically they are taking back from the west indriectly. They are too sneaky, they don't put theirselves infront, instead they pave the ways and let some liberals run in the front...
On the other side of the mirror, secularist ppl in the name of modernity , sticked to Ataturk era (1930s) instead of progress on the way He opened (I think sometimes I am one of them ) and islamists are playing the progressive role to get liberal's (specially business cycles' and west's) support to turn the country to a more religious rule...

I was thinking, after reading the article, along the lines that you posted. My question now is, how well are the sectarians doing? Are they gaining a lot of support?

In quantitative manner, their number is not increasing, but they are gaining a place in the society, they have newspapers, tv stations, business chambers etc..

BTW, there is a mysterious sect. Nobody knows its real power... its leader (Fetullah Gulen ) is living in the USA and according to rumors he is getting great support of USA.. somes say he is dangerious some others tell he is very moderate which can be good example for muslims... He was charged in Turkey so he can't enter to the country, He has more than 300 schools worldwide from Afghanistan to Indonesia, from Russia to USA... most of those schools are elite institutions of the mentioned countries and they are raising future's PMs, presidents, businessmen etc... somes say he is seeking a illuminati like organization in the future, some other says he is serving the interests of Turkey...
