Oh dear

Iceberg off St Francis Bay : South Africa: News: News24

As far as I know, this is the first time an Iceberg came close to our coast in written history. And St. Francis is on our tropical east coast.

Also, we've had the hottest dryest August in recorded history, and now we are having the coldest wettest September-october in recorded history. We had snow In Johannesburg, first in 30 years this winter, a tornado warning for Johannesburg, first ever, today.

Sorry, but something is indeed screwy!

No African Hope you've got it wrong. It snowed in June in Johannesburg - I was there I saw it. It also snowed in September in 1981 and the snow lasted 2 days, I have the photos on my computer to prove both instances. Oh yes and it snowed in June in 1964 I saw that too but I don't have photos. This is the first time in 30 years that it snowed in October If that was 30 years ago that means it snowed in October 1977, I don't remember that. I must look it up. And according to the news tonight the tornado warning is just gusty winds. South Africans would like nothing better than some serious wind, rain and snow. No this is the land of endless sunshine, gorgeous women, beautiful beaches and very friendly people, even if we do argue about the weather.

I see you like our Coat of Arms African Hope, just googled it. They fail to take into account that when it rains in Johannesburg during the winter (ha not cold winter just dry winter) months i.e. July and August, then we get sleet which is like wet snow but not real snow so South Africans get very excited when it is real snow but it is hardly ever enough to cover the ground for more than a day. Sometimes it snows on the mountains in the Cape and KZN (where I live) but it is very dry where African Hope lives so they don't see as much as the mountains or Johannesburg do. I am right here? Anyway, snow is always exciting to us. It's really supposed to be almost summer now so it looks like the changing seasons really are having an effect here. How about that iceberg off St Francis Bay - that could be interesting.

Ok I misunderstood I thought you said it snowed in October 30 years ago. My mistake. It is raining cats and dogs isn't it. It was dry here in July and August, very unusual for the coast, but its making up for it now. But it does rain a lot down here.
This is a very different life from Johannesburg. OOps must be careful, stick to the thread but I guess we are talking about SA's weather.

The iceberg likely broke away from the shelf ice surrounding Antarctica. It may or may not be the result of global warming. Global warming does not play out evenly around the planet. It can result in shifts in upper level air currents resulting in cooling in some regions even while the global climate temperature climbs. It is important to differentiate between "weather" (local, short-term variations) and "climate" (regional or global averages over a much longer period).

Icebergs always break away, but melt loooong before they reach here. The fact that it reached, emans the iceberg was much larger than ussual, and is therefor very likely because of warming. We have seen that icebergs breaking away in antartica is much larger than usual, and that the iceshelf is getting smaller, and this now once again prooofs it. I was defnitly not claiming that the water here was freeezing!!!!

I also try and get people on various boards to move away from the term global warming, and use the term gloabal climate change, as it is logial that it does not warm everywhere.

No I'm retired.
It does, behind the rain clouds.
Just joking, it does shine more than it rains though.
And it doesn't rain very much in winter which makes our winter days glorious.
Come on, say something really ice about how great this country is.
Look how friendly we are.
