They promised to clean up Washington, but they are on the verge of voting John Murtha Majority Leader, and appointing Alcee Hastings head of the Intelligence Committee.

What makes this unacceptable is that it isn't even necessary. It's not like these guys were next in line. They are being promoted over Democrats who are not corrupt simply because Pelosi has animosity for Steny Hoyer and Jane Harman.

It hasn't happened yet, but I'm keepin' an eye on these people. I have hopes that things will change with the Democrats in power. But the only way things will actually change is if we watch them like hawks.

For those who don't know, John Murtha was an indicted co-conspirator in the ABSCAM bribery scandal. Today, he is in the business of funneling taxpayer money to his brother's company. He also torpedoed his own party's lobbying reform bill by trading pork for votes.

Alcee Hastings used to be a federal judge. Until he got impeached for bribery. 'Nuff said, although there's plenty of dirt in his present as well.

I urge all those who have Democratic representatives to give them a call and urge a vote for Steny Hoyer for Majority Leader. The vote is Thursday.

Well, after having read of this, we might conclude that Murtha likes to dole out a lot of pork, however I am not yet convinced that he is corrupt due to the ABSCAM investigation (for which he was not indited or charged). Haven't watched the video of the FBI sting though. Maybe later.


It's how he doles it out. Robert Byrd is the King of Pork, but he doles it out for his state and no other purpose. I hate it, but it's not corrupt in the traditional sense.

What makes Murtha corrupt is first, that he funnels pork to friends and his brother. Second, he trades pork for votes and threatens to withhold pork for those who won't cooperate with him.

He defeated his own party's lobbying reform bill by enticing other Democrats to vote with the Republicans.

Murtha is also the largest recipient of lobbyist funds among House members except for Tom Delay, and some years he's actually received more money than Delay!

Even if you believe he's not corrupt, is this the way to change the culture in Washington? Sounds to me like it's a way to ignore the will of the voters, who cited corruption as a top issue.

And there is no excuse, none at all, for Hastings. He's not even the senior Democrat on that committee.

If Pelosi does indeed get Murtha and Hastings promoted, she had to go out of her way to do it. Which means the Democrats went out of their way to promote corruption. Exactly the opposite of what they promised to do.

Oh, and finally, Murtha got Alan Mollohan put on the ethics committee. Mollohan is under investigation for corruption by the FBI. It's a not very well kept secret that ever since ABSCAM, Murtha has taken a very big interest in making sure that his friends get on the Ethics Committee.

I'm suprised because I figured they would have waited a little while longer before they started doing stuff like this. I think they may be interpreting the election results incorrectly. I think that the reason they won was part republicans/independents punishing the Reps in office and part reps/indies, especially indies, saying "ok, lets see what you got, but we're keeping an eye on you."

I think the dems might be under the impression that they can not go wrong, that we will never vote republicans in again, so they can get away with whatever they want because "it can't be as bad as having reps in majority."

I have said this before and I'll say it again.

Nether party is good at telling the truth. My self I think it is time for a 3rd party to step in and make some ungodly changes for this country and restore some honesty.
