Social Security

Let us see how this goes--should the system be overhaul, privatized or other?

Privatation has not worked well with other govt endeavors, why would it work here?

I'm all for doing away with Social Security. If you want a retirement, then save for it yourself, don't force others to do it for you.

Maybe it's the Libertarian in me, but the whole SS idea has never really sat right with me. I know I'll be stoned for this, but I feel a SS fund for people who fall on hard times should be somewhat akin to charity (e.g., employees voluntarily giving 75 cents out of each paycheck to the United Way). I'm sure there are worlds of better ideas than mine, and I'm open to them. That is just one idea to get the ball rolling.

Think of the money you would save if you were bron the Government put 2000 dollars in a IRA for you. You can do the IRA stuff on your own. Thats all the GOV. has to pay its citizen, and if you are continuing to put money in the IRA, by the time you are 60, you are one rich person. This saves the Gov. money, and gets you more money.

If this is horribly wrong, please explain!

Except for the fact that it isn't mandatory, this is more or less how SS functions now.

Many people who are eligible to receive checks simply return them to the SS Administration's general fund, if they can afford to do so. Ronald Reagan did it, as does every politician I know of who's in that age bracket.
