outsourcing
What’s your take on outsourcing? I had never thought much about it because the industries I work in aren’t affected by it. I saw the “Outsourced” over the weekend, anyone else seen it? It’s a comedy about call center outsourcing in India. There’s a line in it where the US manager says “A lot of Americans are upset about outsourcing” and the overseas call center work replies “but sir, most of the products they buy are made in China.” That’s my take on outsourcing: I buy products made overseas because they are cheaper, ergo I am the driving force behind outsourcing and can’t complain about its effect on US economy and the job market.

Well this is a simple matter. IF we would quit taxing our companies into debt and get insurance out from under our employers, companies wouldn't need to move overseas to make a profit. Also if Congress would quite playing the "minimum wage" stuff thenthat would do us some good too.

Sorry, but I disagree. Outsourcing is a natural outcome of the rise of the global economy. Most large companies do not consider themselves "American", "French" or any other nationality. They pledge alligiance to one flag - POFIT. A company that manufactures widgets in the U.S. must meet certain basic standards regarding worker safety, polution control, contributions to Social Security, etc. They realize that they can outsource the manufacture of widgets to China cutting costs to the bone and making a much greater profits. So they do it. Of course, the factories in China have horrible working conditions, use child labor, produce massive amounts of pollution and don't offer any health care or retirement benefits. Are you in favor of the same working conditions in the U.S.?

Um you just agreed with me. You said ,"...A company that manufactures widgets in the U.S. must meet certain basic standards regarding worker safety, polution control, contributions to Social Security, etc..." how many of those regs needs to go? A whole hell of alot. Hey if a kid wants to work, who am I to tell him no? There will always be child slave labor, we have a human slave trade here in the US as we speak. As in all countries.
There is nothing wrong with a child working. It is wrong to hold them against their will to make them work of course, but if a 10 year old is mature enough to want to do some work, why not encourage it? Under the right conditions, a child can learn trades and other jobs and get ahead in life early, while the jock athlete who has never done anything in his life but play and goof off till the age of 22 cant and hasnt learned anything.
I say if a child wants to work, let them. Good thing we didn't live back before the industrial revolution.
As far as I am concerned we are beginning to see the fruits of overregulation. We are getting lazy adults who wont work at all unless they can make 100K a year.
teaach a kid responsibility so that he can function in life. Dont spoil him rotten to the point he has no skills and does nothing but whine and complain about getting his hands dirty.

Obviously, we have very different points of view. Mine, in part, is the result of personal experiences. The week before I graduated from high school, I went to work in a foundary as a laborer. My job was to shovel heavy sand into an igot mold, while overhead cranes passed overhead carrying huge ladles of molden iron. The air was so thick with dust and fumes that my spit was black. The heat was stifling, and the noise deafening. Accidents included broken bone and terrible burns. Older workers suffered from lung and heart ailments. When I think of child labor I have a vision of some ten year old being subjected to the same conditions or perhaps worse. Their health could be ruined before they reached the age of sixteen. And, FWIW, my mother went to work in the factories when she was 15. When I was still in high school, she lost all the fingers on her right hand to an industrial accident. This issue is real to me.

I have yet to see a post of yours that contributes anything worthwhile to a discussion. If you want to appear credible in any sense of the word, I'd suggest refraining from such impulsive partisan rants.
