FTA....Can someone tell me what its all about???

FTA....Can someone tell me what its all about???Every time i read the newspaper and theres a story about FTA they always reject it,why???

That's an acronym that stands for all sorts of things. Do you mean Free Trade Area?

Well, since you live in Malaysia, I assume they are talking about a south-east Asian free trade area, cutting all currency controls, tariffs, quotas and maybe subsidies between those countries participating. In 1997, the only reason Malaysia was hit by the Asian financial crisis much less than others was because of its imposition of very protectionist currency controls, so that's why your newspapers are probably against it, I would think.

How about the Free Trade Agreement???Many rely hate Malaysia to sign free trade agreement with the U.S.They say America will control Malaysia economy.

Oh, I see. Well, they are probably worried that Americans will buy Malaysian companies, and Malaysian producers will have to compete with cheaper American goods, especially foodstuffs.

On the upswing, once the agreement is signed, any US companies left behind here in manufacturing will be transferred there...however, it is a bad thing for both countries...it creates monopolies where free enterprise once existed, IMHO.

How so? Surely allowing American companies to operate in Malaysia and vica versa, there would be more competition.
