It would hurt some people and help others. Some jobs will be destroyed, while some existing workers will gain. The effect on the overall economy of a minimum wage increase is negligible, as is the effect on unemployment. Few workers and businesses are affected by this.
Wal-mart for example won't have to worry, as they have very few employees making under $7.50/hr. Pizza Hut and McDonald's on the other hand are going to have to raise prices to cover it. As will mom and pops, some of whom may even go out of business. Not many though.

I think it's necessary.
Francois said it best. Adjustments will have to be made, but it won't trash our economy.

To some people, doing anything to upset the status quo seems threatening and dangerous.
When we ended slavery, no doubt some farms went out of business. Not to equate minimum wage with slavery, but on some level a low minimum wage is a sort of wage slavery.

You are correct--it is wage slavery!

Bad. The idea of having government step in and telling a business how much it has to pay it's employe is not a good thing. It actually is the cause for many layoffs.

More layoffs have been because of shareholders dissatisfacation than from a raise in wages. If it was not for govt stepping in to make it look like it cares about the worker; wages would still be $1.00 an hour. Government steps in constantly, everytime a company lessenes benefits, the govt knows and does nothing! Inaction in itself is an action.

Best idea would be for government to just step out and let the free market work like it's supposed to.

The minimum wage isn't necessary, at least not at the federal level. Nowadays most states have minimum wages of their own. I think the federal government should just let it stand where it is and let states decide.
