Tired of looking at the bottom of things and seeing Made In China?
What would be bad at making higher tariffs and having more things Made In America? I know I'd be willing to pay a little more for things if they were American made. There'd definantly be more jobs for Americans to be able to keep up with the popular demand.

I say we just make it more advantageous for them to make it over here.

What would you suggest that would make it more advantageous? What policies would do that?

The fair tax.
In theory, it would get rid of all of the hidden taxes, that we pay anyway in the final price, in the cost of manufacturing goods in America. To put it as plainly as I've heard it, it will make America the biggest tax haven in the world, not only bringing back our businesses, but also businesses from other countries. There is a fair tax book written by Neil Boortz and Congressman John Linder that explains it all, but it has been a while since I have read it. Oh yeah, it also eliminates the IRS so there will be no federal witholding tax taken out of your paycheck. The tax we pay is seen in a 23% sales tax on items we buy, but since the plan gets rid of the embedded taxes involved in manufacturing the actual price stays about the same, give or take.

Mr. Boortz has actually been approached by several other countries about using the fair tax so that they can beat us to it and attract all the businesses first.

I believe that in theory the government will have a whole lot more money for social programs than ever before. We should also be able to decrease the deficit more efficiently while taking power away from the government. I know this probably sounds crazy at this point, but thats what I'm hearing. SuperBug should probably know a lot about it too, if I'm missing anything.

What is the FairTax plan?
The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a rebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar revenue neutrality, and the repeal of the 16th Amendment.
This nonpartisan legislation (HR 25/S 25) abolishes all federal personal, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, self-employment, and corporate taxes and replaces them all with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax – collected by existing state sales tax authorities.
The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend, not on what we earn. It does not raise any more or less revenue; it is designed to be revenue neutral. So it is also cost neutral – the final cost for goods and services changes little under the FairTax. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.
The FairTax:
* Abolishes the IRS
* Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
* Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
* Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
* Allows American products to compete fairly
* Reimburses the tax on purchases of basic necessities
* Enables retirees to keep their entire pension
* Enables workers to keep their entire paycheck
We offer a library of information throughout this Web site about the features and benefits of the FairTax plan. Please explore!

Fry pretty much hit the nail on the head. Getting rid of the current tax system and putting in the National Sales Tax (a.k.a. Fair Tax) would bring a shit-pot (that's pretty damn big) jobs, money and wealth to this country. Companies would be bringing their head quarters over here due to the tax haven that will be created. People would be able to keep their entire pay check (yea, 100% of it). The necessities of life would be covered, so the lower incomes would end up paying nothing in tax. The IRS would be gone, and that would mean April 15th is just like any other day. Money that is kept in off shore accounts will come home, because the IRS is gone and it's not going to get taxed. Your savings will no longer be taxed. Taxes will no longer be used as a campaign tactic. It's just a win for everyone.
