Bush And Domestic Spending
WASHINGTON: US President George W Bush yesterday said that his upcoming budget proposal would emphasise restraint on domestic spending while putting defence and war costs for Iraq and Afghanistan as the top priority.
"Cutting the deficit during a time of war requires us to restrain spending in other areas," Bush said in his weekly radio address.
Previewing the fiscal year 2008 budget he will unveil tomorrow, Bush also said it would show that his goal of erasing the deficit by 2012 could be accomplished while making his tax cuts permanent.
"Congress needs to make this tax relief permanent, so we can keep America's economy growing. Pro-growth economic policies also play a vital role in our plan to balance the federal budget," he said.
"Our growing economy has produced record levels of tax revenue. This increase in tax revenue has helped us cut the deficit in half three years ahead of schedule," he added.
"On Monday, we will take the next step when I submit to Congress a budget that will eliminate the deficit by 2012."

What are the opinions? Should domestic spending be a priority? Maybe not?

That would be ideal. However, if I were President, I would suspend almost all domestic spending and make the military spending mroe efficient for the good of America. I would set up temporary funds to run by private donations that would try to cover cuts made. I know, with SS and Medicare funding down there would be many problems and I would commit politicial suicide, but I personally have come to prioritize cutting the debt. Our three biggest spendings are medicare, social security and the defence. We spend more in annual interest on the debt than on any of these. If I as Pres could at least cut half of the debt, I would consider the political suicide worth it.

I don't think that's really the issue in his proclamations. In spite of US public messages to get out of Iraq through past November voting, polls so lopsided as to promote impeachment and congress saying no to Iraq, he's flipping everyone the finger saying 'my' Iraq is far more important than you mere citizens and your welfare.

Do you have a family, job or investment income, own property or pay taxes? It certainly doesn't sound like it. Do you understand the majority of that debt service you despise is military related? SS and Medicare funding aren't down, our government takes all trust revenue over expenditures and puts it in the general fund to reduce politically sensitive deficits, replacing that revenue with non-trading US securities, more debt on money you contributed out of your paycheck.

His last balanced budget target was 2009? Crystal ball stuff, again. Unless they get another big equity bubble going to pump GDP with consumer flow-through from sub-prime debt, we're in for an unbelievable mess when this administration leaves office.

Maybe, Bush should dig out his flight suit put up a new banner saying
Balanced Budget Accomplished 2012. If I recall his job rating was above 40% back then.
