Throw in slowing production of oil, the basic energy foundation of modern society, and the picture becomes even more dire. This could become a perfect storm of economic failures.

Needless to say the next presidency or two will define America's existence.

But no worries, with Indonesia not controlling bird flu we can count on 1/3 or more of the population dying. It would sure stop overpopulation, global poverty, and environmental degradation problems pretty quickly. Too bad it has to kill people to do so.

you guys might disagree with me but this is what should occur. please comment back on my ideas im glad to continue the conversation.

Obviously first of all everyone believes the deficite is way to high, which it is though it has fallen almost 300million in the past 3-4 years. We have only had 2 years of surplus in the past 60 years though which makes it very difficult to judge greenspan(though i do not like him).

Tax cuts at this time are good because it allows more people to spend more money which keeps the eonomy stable.

Social Securities mismanagment has destroyed the upcoming generations ability to survive and the program basically needs to be scraped, it is only hurting americans to keep it open at the time. We are a 5:1 ratio and it is predicted to be 2:1 or even 1:1 within the next couple of decades.

Our next big problem is foreign investment, we have way to much of our money in foreign places. Roughly 20-30% of american money is invested outside of American Borders.

Lastly we must close our factories outside of America and once again become an industrial nation instead of becoming a desk-job nation. We need to no longer be dependent on other peoples imports and go back to what we were 200 years ago one of the largest export nations in the world.

I would agree with you demosthenesx.
We need to stop offshoring Jobs to foreign
countries, and put the American industrial complex back on the map of America not
China or Mexico, which is where the American Corporations are sending new Jobs.I still feel Tax cuts now, will come back to hurt us at some point in the Future.Tax increase now , so we will have more revenue in the Future.

Gosh darn it! Stop saying recession is around the corner!! That's what does it! If you freak the people out they stop buying if that happens all hell breaks out... like it is now!

The best thing the government could do is to shut up and fix it through the things you've all proposed. KILL WALL MART!!

Huge job losses set off recession alarms - The Denver Post
Quote:
WASHINGTON—It's no longer a question of recession or not. Now it's how deep and how long.
Workers' pink slips stacked ever higher in March as jittery employers slashed 80,000 jobs, the most in five years, and the national unemployment rate climbed to 5.1 percent. Job losses are nearing the staggering level of a quarter-million this year in just three months.
.....
"It is now very clear that the fat lady has sung for the economic expansion. The country has slipped into a recession," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group. .....

All the economy's problems are forcing people and businesses to hunker down, crimping spending and hiring, a vicious cycle.
....."If you've got a job, hang on to it the best you can."
It is no longer a question of "if" but rather "how bad" and "how long". It is like a snowball rolling downhill gathering mass and momentum as it moves.

No, it isn't. The apex of U.S. power probably occurred in the 1970s. We are no longer the world's premier manufacturer. Our educational system is third rate on a world scale. Other nations exceed us in terms of quality of life. We are in extreme debt to other nations. We have a staggering trade deficit. The U.S. dollar is imploding. U.S. oil production has been in decline since 1970. Our standing with the international community is at a record low. It goes on and on. Sadly, we are not the same great nation that we once were.

Yes, but the economic decline has been happening ever since 1970s, correct? Since then there have been economic scares but they were made worse and worse by the media flipping out.

The US has been in extreme need of something, whether a good leader or some radical revolution. None of these things seems to be happening anytime soon...
