Do homosexuals deserve rights?
Dredd's post follows below
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, homosexuals are equal under the law.
They should be recognized as equal citizens and not have to hide thier sexuality from the military.
They should be recognized as equal citizens and have access to marriage.
If we are to promote a society of married couples, why are we depriving citizens of marriage?

While I agree with you somewhat, homos do deserve some rights. However, I do not want gays flaunting their lifestyle around me. They can be gay @ home, but in mainstream, I don't want to see them making out or holding hands, etc.
They should, however, be able to live happy, in their own home.

It is quite apparent that some people have no idea what a Constitutional Republic is.

Judge Dredd, homosexuals do have the right to marry. They have the same right to marry that straight people do, that is, people of the opposite sex. Allowing homosexuals to marry someone of the same sex is granting special rights. What about the polygamists and the bisexuals who want to marry more than one person? What about the people who want to marry their horse? Should we then start granting special rights for them, too?
sybarite, I whole-heartily agree.

Some here would have you believe we live in a Christian theocracy...

yhwhluver, what do you think marriage is for? That is, how, exactly, is it specific to a traditional relationship?

What about heteros flaunting their lifestyle around homos? You believe only those that fall in the majority should have rights? America isn't an ochlocracy.

I thought you were supposed to spread the good word? Isn't that your duty, if you're a Christian anyway. Get out there and recruit new followers.
Gays are a laugh. They invariably have more character than straight people and gay men can really know a lot and advise about hair and girly stuff. They make great friends. People should relax and appreciate their diversity and personal qualities and how very entertaining they are.
You seem to be afraid of them. Do you know any personally? What is it that makes you uncomfortable around them?

Alun, I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at or what you're asking. Do you mean what do I think marriage is for (which is your first question, but the second part really confused me after that)?
I think the dictionary (thanks to dictionary.com) explains it pretty well for me:
Quote:

the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.
|
I think it's for a man and woman who are committed to each other and who want to have a family with each other. It's a social structure that's accepted all over the world and has been for centuries (whether or not it was called marriage or initiated by a wedding ceremony is a different discussion and doesn't really matter here). I think when you start to play with that structure and start taking it apart is where you start to have trouble. Sure, homosexuality has been around a long time, but as far as I know, only recently (past 20 years?) has it (the movement) started demanding we change our social structure for them. I'm trying to think of how legallizing gay marriage would benefit society as a whole.
