Army Stops GI Blogs

Do you consider this a violation?

The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer, Wired News has learned. The directive, issued April 19, is the sharpest restriction on troops' online activities since the start of the Iraq war. And it could mean the end of military blogs, observers say.

Military officials have been wrestling for years with how to handle troops who publish blogs. Officers have weighed the need for wartime discretion against the opportunities for the public to personally connect with some of the most effective advocates for the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq -- the troops themselves. The secret-keepers have generally won the argument, and the once-permissive atmosphere has slowly grown more tightly regulated. Soldier-bloggers have dropped offline as a result.

It appears to me that they are trying to prevent the leak of vital information. However this seems a little extreme.

Having grown up during WW2 and the Korean 'conflict', I recall letters from the front to which razors had been applied.

The Internet has brought a new system of communication and new methods have to be applied to protect such things as troop movements and deployments, etc. The enemy uses the Internet, too.

Such is life.

No.

They are US government property.

Frankly, I'm surprised it took them this long to put a stop to it.

My impression of this is that it was done not to keep vital information from falling into the hands of the enemies, but to keep GI's from bloggin about the horrors of war. Just my opinion.

I can understand DOD's concern with OPSEC. But this seems to go beyond those considerations. Being able to receive e-mail was a great moral booster for soldiers. I can't help but feel this is more about squashing bad news from the front than keeping "The Terrorists" from gaining valuable operational information.

So what. This has been the standard in the military for years. Any snail mail letter sent by a soldier can be read and censored as well.
