Arab States and Shared Nuke Tech

OK sports fans, this should be good.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The oil-rich Arab states on the Persian Gulf said Sunday that they will consider starting a joint nuclear program for peaceful purposes.

The announcement comes as the U.S. and its allies allege Iran is developing atomic weapons in violation of treaty commitments and appears to be a muscle-flexing gesture to the gulf's Persian state. It also was sure to ratchet up concerns about a regional nuclear arms race.

This seems to be scary if you read it carefully, IMO

Almost sounds like something Iran would say.

RIYADH - Gulf Arab countries want to acquire nuclear energy capability and have ordered a study on a possible joint atomic programme, a statement issued at the close of a Gulf Cooperation Council summit said today.

"The countries of the region have the right to nuclear energy technology for peaceful purposes," GCC chief Abdul-Rahman al-Attiya told a closing session of the meeting in Riyad

I agree that they have the right to nuclear technology , but I don't feel they need it at this point.

Take Iran for example. They have huge reserves of natural gas along with large oil reserves. Natural gas is a clean burning fuel. If they were serious about needing energy sources all they have to do is use the resources they have.

I think they are using nuclear energy as a cover for their real intention of developing nuclear weapons that they can use as a threat against their enemies.

If I am not mistaken some of the countries did not sign on to the NPT. At least, Iran has signed on.

Iran signing on is like Ted Bundy saying he won't kill your daughter.

Well, that and the entire hostage thing from the late '70s and early '80s.

My popint was that several countries that would conform to the NPT are reaching for nukes. Personally, I do not give two squirts about rhetoric, a reality is approaching--that is the possiblity of nukes in this unstable region.

Do not know if it will do any good, but at least someone is questioning the decision.

WASHINGTON, Dec 15 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday she wanted to know more about Gulf states' plans to study nuclear power and questioned why Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil producer, might need atomic energy.

The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council said on Sunday it would study a joint civil atomic program, raising concerns the Arab states may want to protect themselves if Iran acquires nuclear weapons and sparking fears of a regional arms race.

"I'd like to know more about it and I think it's something that we should have discussions (on)," Rice told Reuters when asked about the move by the GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

My question also--Why do they need nukes?

They don't. They are just experts in outsourcing their wars.

From the 1st Gulf war to liberate Kuwait where the west fought their war, to the July war to get rid of Hizbullah and the Shiites where they outsourced it to Israel.

The Arabs barely invest in their armies, do you honestly think they want nuclear weapons?

They have always been wary of Iran, and they are making sure to frighten the West with this so that Iran is NOT allowed under any circumstances to pursue its nuclear program. They want the West and Israel to defeat Iran on their behalf. They got used to the good life. Nothing should disturb it.

IMHO, no one is going to end up having nuclear weapons, neither Iran nor the Arabs.

The ME is on the verge of the big boom, and the Sunni-Shia conflict is going to spread from the ocean to the gulf and beyond. The days where others fought their battles are over for the Arabs. And the days where the West supported dictatorships are also over. Things will soon get out of hand.

I agree with you completely and I have been saying the same thing for awhile now. IT WILL get messy.
