Global Arms Trade

The United States, which is the world’s biggest exporter of arms and accounts for more than 50 per cent of all arms exports, on Wednesday became the only country in the United Nations to vote against letting work begin on a new treaty to bolster arms embargoes and prevent human rights abuses by setting uniform worldwide standards for arms deals. The vote in the 192-nation UN General Assembly was 153-1, with the United States casting the sole “no” vote. Twenty-four other nations abstained, including major arms sellers Russia and China and emerging exporters India and Pakistan.

Very interesting? And your thoughts would be?????

And of course when the US is against it, that means it probably won't happen, or at least it won't happen effectively.
I have heard that Americans claim this treaty would contravene the right to bear arms. Quite how the right of Americans to bear arms links to the right to sell arms to non-Americans I'm not sure.
Of course, it's probably just a cover, actually the reason is probably that many senior republican politicians have links to arms companies, this treaty would reduce the profit of these American companies.

THe insight is good, OZ. I think the treaty would have an adverse effect on some of the US biggest clients, like Israel that is why they are against it.
