Iran, Iraq Reach Security Agreement

TEHRAN, Iran -
Iraq's president said Wednesday he had reached a security agreement with
Iran, which the United States accuses of fueling the chaos in the war-torn country. Iran's president called on countries to stop backing "terrorists" in Iraq and for the Americans to withdraw.

Tehran is believed to back some of the Shiite militias blamed in the vicious sectarian killings that have thrown the country into chaos. The United States has said the Iraqi government should press Iran to stop interfering in its affairs in a bid to calm the violence

But will it last? Depends on how much influence Iran has with the militias.

At this point I think the only thing that I see as positive is Iran and Iraq are talking. What becomes of their relationship is too early to say.

I don't put much faith in lip service from Iran.

I agree, but the one thing that may help is the Shi'as are Shi'as and the possible assistance in ending the violence would bring considerable more influence to Iran. And that is what they are looking for.

WASHINGTON - US President George W. Bush told Iraqi Shia leader Abdel Aziz Al Hakim Monday that Iran and Syria must halt their “destructive activity” in Iraq, a Bush aide said.

Bush said later in a television interview he was confident that Hakim and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki “are committed to ending murder” in the violence-riven country.

“I know that he (Hakim) is prepared to take on the fact that there are murderers inside that society,” Bush told Fox News

I think that if you want to limit Iran's involvement in Iraq, maybe Bush should meet with al-Sadr?
