The Shiite prime minister is under heavy U.S. pressure to disband militias run by his Shiite political backers. Sunni politicians have threatened to quit the political system, charging al-Maliki with not being serious about reconciliation.
Speaking to Iraq's army commanders, al-Maliki said "you should know that all the great efforts you are forced to exert are the result of political disagreements. This crisis we are living through is a result of politics not security failures."
