Iran Invites Iraq And Syria To Meeting
Iran has invited the Iraqi and Syrian presidents to Tehran for a weekend summit with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to hash out ways to cooperate in curbing the runaway violence that has taken Iraq to the verge of civil war and threatens to spread through the region, four key lawmakers told The Associated Press on Monday.
It woulkd seem that since we helped create the influence of Iran in the ME, they are taking advantage of the situation to improve their standing in the region.

It would appear we are doing everything necessary to make Iran the major player and shot caller in the ME.

U.S. Wary of Iran, Syria Role in Iraq
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration cast a wary eye Monday on signs that Iran and Syria were taking a more active diplomatic role in Iraq, even as debate in the U.S. centered on how many troops to keep in the war.
Found another opinion about the upcoming meeting. I think it should be a concern for Iran is becoming more influential as the war wears on.

Someone, somewhere has got to stand up with some balls and say time is now we must deal with the rising influence of Iran.

Syria could be gettin the cat bird seat.
TEHRAN: Iran and the United States are playing a complicated diplomatic game, jockeying for influence in Iraq as violence there spirals out of control, but there is one major wild card in dueling summit meetings planned for coming days: Syria.
This meeting has drawn a lot of attention, not here, but in the worlds capitals.

Found another story about the meeting. The US has told Iraq not to meet with Syria and Iran. It appears that the US has the clout. Why not have a meeting that could produce some form of cooperation that could lead to the lessening of hostilities?

Syria could be a stabilizing force in Iraq.
DAMASCUS, Syria - As the U.S. debates whether to reach out to Syria for help in calming Iraq, some close to the Syrian regime say the country would be willing to help, but only if it got something valuable in return.
Would it be such a big deal if they helped calm the region? What is there to lose in trying?

WASHINGTON - President Bush’s upcoming meeting in Jordan with Iraq’s prime minister Nouri al-Maliki ought to be one for the books. How the two of them can cozy up toward Syria while it continues as a suspected sponsor of drive-by Lebanese assassinations remains to be seen.
So it would seem that your pres is about to cozy up with Syria.

Iraqi prez begins talks with Iran.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran will do whatever it can to help provide security to Iraq amid warnings the country is on the brink of civil war.
Mr Ahmadinejad made the pledge at the start of a visit to Iran by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, whose trip was delayed for two days because of a curfew imposed after a bombing on Thursday that killed 202 people in a Shiite Muslim stronghold.
What will be the outcome of these meetings? Will it help?

TEHRAN - A safe, advanced, and powerful Iraq will be beneficial to Iran, Iraq, and the entire region, Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said here on Monday.
“We are two friendly and brotherly nations, and it is natural that we should always be on each other’s side,” Ahmadinejad said at a joint press conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who is on a two-day visit to Iran.
“The Islamic Republic sees no limitations in cooperating with Iraq in the fields of industry, energy, education, research, and technology,” Ahmadinejad added.
I realize this is in the Tehran Times, but the story is intersting, but ie he upfront with his support?

If it comes to Iran being the ones to help Iraq, then that's when the US has lost the war in Iraq. If we allow Iran to help, then how are we to block their nuclear actions. The US needs to deploy more troops for a longer period of time, maybe like 7 years, and then worry about making a withdraw slowly.
When Iran becomes the spokesman for Iraq, we have lost all hope of any influence in the MD.

I think that they should be included in the solution to the violence, enough Iraqi civlians have died in the name of democracy. I look at the situation and see the Iranians are trying to come to the negotiation table, but they have got to look good while doing so. Just like the US, I would not doubt that there is already talks go on away from the public eye.
