The editor of Wired magazine checked MySpace member list against fed sex offender list and found 744 offenders registered. Of those, he found 600+ that had been convicted of an offense in the 3 yrs. This is those who used real names and he asked just how many there could be using aliases.

Speaking of that subject, I have a problem with the entire idea of a data base at all. I won't be surprised at all if it goes to court and you see an end to the data bases. Once the crime is over they are still on there. Some are on there for things as simple as mooning, taking a leak in the forest, high school boy friends or girl friends that were a year younger than they, blow jobs, people not telling the truth about their age, or curtains that weren't shut all the way. So you end up with people that just don't need to be on there, yet, because there is a witch hunt going on, their lives are ruined.

You basically, have no prob with sex offenders , that may or may not, be trolling for a victim.

"sex offenders" is a very broad term. if an 18 year old has consentual sex with a 15 or 16 year old, it is brought to court by the parents, and the 18 year old is convicted of statutory, they are considered a sex offender (for 7 years or so?).

parents should be closely monitoring the computer activities of their own children up until the age of 17-18ish. it is simply parental responsibility to do so. they are your children; pay attention to what they do, build a relationship of trust, and you may be able to help ensure that they reach adulthood and don't fall into the hands of a predator of ANY kind.
