A horrible coincidence

Earlier I went to msnbc.com and saw this story about the end of a small town called Picher in my native Oklahoma due to pollution from lead and zinc mining. The entire area is an EPA SuperFund site.

Now, I get home and see this story:

Quote:
At least 5 dead as tornadoes strike eastern Oklahoma

A tornado that tore through Picher this evening has left at least five dead, the state medical examiner's office confirmed.

The south end of the city has been completely destroyed. At least a dozen ambulances have been seen leaving the area, and authorities have shut off access to the town. Utility poles have been snapped in half in the area and car windshields are blown out.
Those poor people must feel like God hates them right about now. Remember to say a prayer for them tonight...

Just heard about it on the news here. It looks a real mess. Just hope no one else is found dead and that everyone had insurance and will be looked after till they can get themselves back together again.

Looked serious enough to get some state if not FEMA assistance as well, hopefully the stuff started already.

For the people living there who have lost their homes, the people who have been injured and died and their loved ones, it is every bit as significant.

What is the matter with people?

Hurricane Katrina is not being discussed here.

What do you want? For people to be in natural disasters and everyone to cheer or something?

I was talking about the fate of people involved in natural disasters, especially the poor people who cannot afford insurance or, worse, who buy insurance and are then ripped off by insurance companies trying to wriggle out of paying the claims.

All these things happened after Hurricane Katrina (which I was using as an illustration) and I was cynically suggesting that they could happen again after this latest natural disaster.

Look disasters happen in the midwest all the time, and believe it or not there are tons of poor people throughout the midwest. You don't see us waiting around during a natural disaster insisting the government come and take care of us. We handle most situations just fine by ourselves and the few times when big daddy is needed he usually doesn't start his work until well after the disaster anyways.

I have no sympathy for "Karina victims", making yourself a victim of laziness and idleness is not the governent's fault.

Jeez, I've seen whole towns erased and people didn't cry as much as New Orleans did. . .

I owe you an apology then. You will notice that before this there was someone saying that with China this incident paled into insignificance.. I thought it might be 'have a go at these people day'.

I would probably have reacted differently if the other post hadn't been there.
