Official: Saddam to Be Executed Tonight

Tonights the night I guess. I guess we'll see.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The witnesses to Saddam Hussein's impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities.

A top Iraqi official said Saddam will be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, Baghdad time, or 10 p.m. Friday EST..................

Here's why:

Saddam Hussein's Atrocities

Hussein's regime killed, tortured, raped and terrorized the Iraqi people and its neighbors for over two decades.

Hundreds of thousands of people died as a result of Hussein's actions.

Hussein has had approximately 40 of his own relatives murdered.

1980-88: Iran-Iraq war left 150,000 to 340,000 Iraqis and 450,000 to 730,000 Iranians dead.

1983-1988: Documented chemical attacks by Iraqi regime caused some 30,000 Iraqi and Iranian deaths.

1988: Chemical attack on Kurdish village of Halabja killed approximately 5,000 people.

1987-1988: Iraqi regime used chemical agents in attacks against at least 40 Kurdish villages.

1990-91: 1,000 Kuwaitis were killed in Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

1991: bloody suppression of Kurdish and Shi'a uprisings in northern and southern Iraq killed at least 30,000 to 60,000.

2,000 Kurdish villages were destroyed during the campaign of terror

2001 Amnesty International report: "Victims of torture in Iraq are subjected to a wide range of forms of torture, including the gouging out of eyes, severe beatings and electric shocks... some victims have died as a result and many have been left with permanent physical and psychological damage."

Better to do it quickly, before Sunni baathists organise anything. It probably would have been better to say it will be in a week, and do it now.
Or maybe that's what they've done.

Yes, that would make sense.

It might have already been DONE who knows. It would be best not to shoot up flares and set up internet ads and ads on television that it's going to go down.

I think we'll know when it's over is all. They'll avoid fanfare and advertising if they're smart.

Tom Casey, deputy spokesman at the State Department, said in early afternoon that "there has been no change in his status" and that Saddam remained in American hands. In Baghdad, an Iraqi government official who refused to be identified by name because he was not authorized to release the information said authorities there were not yet in control of Saddam.Casey said the information he had was provided by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad"I don't have any more details to offer you," he told reporters at the State Department. Casey reiterated the Bush administration's view that "we think it's very important there be accountability." He said "it was up to the Iraqis" to formally request that Saddam be brought forward for execution.

Asked when that might occur, Casey said, "I really don't have a timeline on this."
