David Eddings reigns supreme in my library. His belgariad and mallorean series will be classics in the years to come. In the realm of sci-fi/fantasy, he will be ranked with tolkein and asimov one day is my belief.

other favorites include:

Shakespeare
Christopher marlowe
Anne Bishop
Anne McCaffery
Homer- I prefer the illiad over the oddessey
Fred Saberhagen- The Book of Swords
E. E. Doc smith- chronicle of the lensman

Ah, a Shakepeare and Marlowe fan. Two giants, who could not but respect them? I haven't read the Iliad, I have to confess, but I did enjoy the Odyssey (though it demands a reread).

Since you're into sci-fi, have you read Dune by Frank Herbert? It's an excellent novel if you have not, highly recommended!

I have read most of the dune series. It is a good story, but I think herbert is a bit long winded.

You need to pick up a copy of the Illiad, It is an excellent work. Though most have problems getting through it.

I definitely will! I am currently working on finishing up Dostoevsky's works, then plan on reading some Tolstoy, then Cervantes-- I have a long list, but the Iliad will certainly fit in there... somewhere...

I have to admit I have not heard of Dostoevsky.

Tolstoy is some heavy reading. My mother (also had an english lit degree) made me read "War and Peace" when I was 15. It was difficult to get through but I guess it was worth it in the end.

Good luck with tolstoy!!!

Thanks!

If you haven't heard of Dostoevsky, you MUST read him. There is a (somewhat) tongue-in-cheek literary truism that says every man is born either a Tolstoyan or a Dostoevskian. Dostoevsky focuses more on the Id and the Ego, and his works are very dark and existential. Look into "Crime and Punishment" or "Notes from Underground." He's my favourite author on the merit of these two works alone, and becomes nearly one with me in "The Brothers Karamazov"!
