Ehhh, I'm certainly biased, but I just genuinely don't enjoy them. Everything is so two-dimensional and melodramatic...

Good man! How could I leave Bertrand Russell off my list (especially considering he's in my sig!)? Russell is amazing, Vonnegut is amazing, Kesey is amazing, and you're spot on about 'The Grand Inquisitor'... I'm inclined to agree with Freud in calling it one of the peaks of world literature.

As for the others (Tolstoy included ), I'm afraid I haven't read them. Kingsolver is an alumnus of my school, though

Feast of the Goat is a good historical novel by Mario Vargas Llosa about the Dominican Republic. He also wrote a good one about Brazil, and of course a lot about his native Peru, where he even ran for president against Fujimori, who is now being prosecuted, and wrote about it, for me, a dissapointing book Imagining Argentina by ~Lawrence Thornton is a haunting look at the Dirty War in Argentina. Another entertaining Graham Greene book is Travels with My Aunt, which ends up in Paraguay, a little known country where the major industry is contraband, and it continues- a recent president was busted for having a stolen BMW. High priced cars can be bought cheap with good looking papers there I'm told. Ciudad del Este is a wild smuglers town close by the spectacular Iqua Azu waterfalls and the Argentine and Brazilian borders, where the tourist facilities are. Get your pirated stuff cheap in Ciadad del Este.
