Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

Has anyone read the book Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins? I found it a fascinating read that showed how the United States is manipulating other developing countries to its will. In all essentiality, the United States is making a truly global empire, one that no one really knows exists.

I find the fact that the citizens of the United States have not noticed the abuse that the government has done to other countries both fascinating and disgusting. Its also interesting that the United States has made the first truly global empire, all behind the backs of the citizens that live in it.

No, it comes highly recommended by people I find to be principled and knowledgeable but falls in the category: Things I might want to read when I'm needing someone to tell me how right I am or am having trouble maintaining a healthy level of pissed off.

Excellent book. I listened to the audio version and it was amazing.

Shameful exposé of the United States meddling in South America - Panama and Ecuador in particular. The assasination of Omar Torrijos and Jaime Roldos was especially disturbing.

It was an excellent read. I agree, the assassination of Torrijos was worse for me to read, it hit me somewhere, I really attached myself to Torrijos. Roldos assassination was almost as shocking. It also exposed the meddling of the United States in other regions as well, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia...

I loved this book. I damn near read the whole thing on a flight from Texas to Philly. I highly recommend it.

An amazing book, a point of view you just never would expect to get. I thought the first few chapters were a very good read, the rest somewhat padded, but overall fascinating.

I must read it. I worked in the Canal Zone during Torrijos' time, and found his rule pretty good. For example, during his time, the national guard was pretty much not on the take, in comparison to most other Panamanian regimes. The US and the Panamanian establishment pretty much did not like him. I always suspected that the US might have been responsible for his death.

Interesting how the company's man Noriega took over. What was Bush#1 doing during those times? What were the years that he was head of the company? Grahm Greene wrote a book about his visit with the Torrijos folks called "Getting to Know the General". A good read. I believe he visited Omar after he made the deal with Carter to get the Canal Zone back on good terms. Some nice real estate
