Thumbs up Reading Club: Brave New World

OK men and ladies, time for your first reading club assignment:

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

I'm reading it now, on page 25ish.

It's about a futuristic society in a totalitarian government. Book was written in 1931, I believe. Huxley's perspective appears to be libertarian. He saw that the world was coming to a choice between two totalitarian regimes (Soviet communism and Nazi fascism). His book reflects that.

Read the book and opine.

Good Idea W.EB. Not just your choice of literature.

I'm one of the few libertarians who hasn't read this one yet though I've heard plenty about it by hanging out in my circles. Maybe I'll stop off at the library today.

Gosh - I'd forgotten about Brave New World. I read it years ago but reckon it's worth reading again with a more mature mind.

If you like it try The Doors of Perception, also by Huxley, next. It's a study of the expansion of the mind from the author's perspective after taking mescaline (a psychadelic drug similar to LSD). Very weird from what I remember but interesting if you like that kind of thing.

Next, read Brave New World Revisited. Huxley's "Island" presents his vision of the ideal society and drug. Trivia- he died the same day as JFK

Yep. He was looking for a better recreational drug than alcahol that would improve the mind. He called it soma in his Island novel that pictured his vision of utopia, and was perhaps his last book. He said "Island" wrapped up his thinking
