I think I have changed my mind about the Satanic Verses
In an earlier thread, I argued that Rushdie's book "the Satanic Verses" was a piece of crap. I had not read the book, nor even a book a review of it. I assumed that it was a book arguing that Islam was about Satanism.
For whatever reason, I stumbled upon the subject again. Perhaps because I was bored, I looked up the Satanic Verses in Wikipedia and I was totally wrong about what the Satanic Verses are and what it is based upon. You all probably know what the Satanic Verses actually are, the real meat of the story is that the book alleges that Mohammad uttered that there are three other gods besides Allah. Muslims say that is false, and others say that it is true. I read further in the Wiki and it said that most Western scholars agree with this premise that Mohammad did utter those words, but later recanted them.
I did another search and found this article, written by a self-described "progressive Muslim" : http://www.geocities.com/zeeshanhasan/satan.html
He basically agrees with Rushdie and provides a fairly plausible argument: that the source is a very old one, as old as the sources which Muslims use to deny Rushdie's claim. Also that at the time this guy was writing, it would have been impossible for him to make up a story about Mohammad (probably because he would have been killed). The author points to several parts of the Koran that seem tailor made to facilitate a back-pedalling on the polytheism.
It's very interesting.

I did find it interesting that the translation into Arabic of the Satanic verses means "the Satanic verses of the Qu'ran" because there is no other translation of "verses" in Arabic. So many Muslims thought the book was saying that all of the verses of the Qu'ran were Satanic in nature.

Very interesting.
I never had the slightest idea, what this book is about. I only knew that its not quite a bestseller in the muslim world
Sounds interesting though...

The book itself mentions that, but it's not actually about it. It's about two British-born Indian Muslims. One is a Bollywood superstar, I forget what the other does. They are on a plane, which explodes as it goes over the British channel, and they both fall into the sea. The actor becomes a God or something, the other a demon (although it later indicates that they ahven't really transformed, they just think they have). As time goes by, the God goes crazy and eventually commits suicide, while the Demon is redeemed, and returns to India to live peacefully. It's an exploration of psychology through the medium of fantasy.

I really don't know that much about him or his work, outside of the Satanic Verses, but I've read that he has supposedly been given recognition and awards for earlier literary writings prior to this book.
BTW, here is a photo of him and his wife, or soon to be ex-wife.

That is totally false.. I happen to read, write and speak arabic fluently and although many words are not so easily translated, the Arabic word "AYAT" means distinctly "Verses, Signs, Evidences" I own a number of Qur'ans and there are no such thing as "Satanic Verses". This is a way that Christians and those fearful of the spread of Islam have conjured up to discredit Islam

There were plenty of people who made up lies about Mohammed (PBUH) and some even physically harmed him, none of them were killed.
Four Gods. I hardly believe that.

The "Satanic verses" theory, which the book references, is not talking about verses in the Qu'ran.
