There has been a longh lasting debate over the Australian Flag, over supporter of the Coloniel British Flag, and callers for an Independant Australian Flag showing the Uniquity of the Aussi land

AUSFLAG - OUR OWN FLAG

And, what's your point? There are those who are pushing for a separation from England and the constitutional monarchy and those for it.

I would personally prefer the flag that you've got now. The American flag has it's roots in the Union Jack, and I'm not going to make a fuss over it.

Here's an interesting link I found, somewhat related.

What does the British flag look like?

the flag is a pretty symbolic thing, it is the connection on Britian that im actually talking about, would we ever see Australia under its own president, rather then the British Monarch??

how do people in Australia, or commenwealth members view it...

As a British person, I don't mind. There is a historic connection obviously, but the Australians have the right to decide for themselves.
As some of you have pointed out, it's part of the wider debate about whether to keep all of the links or not.
If they like having the Queen and what-not, then keep it. If not, don't.

i think untill circumstances change Australia will stay to Britain. Unlike the US declaring their independence over getting unfair treatment under British rule, Australia has never had any such problems.

As for the flag that should stay, it is historic and looks alright. also it is not to complicated like some other countries flags and is quite unique.

There is but one small problem with the Australian Flag and that is the version of the Union Flag that appears on it. This is the Red Saltire representing Ireland, which is a piece of political expediency that was used after the Act of Union because to have used a truly Irish emblem, such as the Harp would have upset the feelings of many in Britain.
The Red Saltire is a badge of the FitzGerald family and although called the Cross of Saint Patrick had nothing to do with him.

Not sure why you say the flag is "unique" - it is almost identical to the New Zealand flag. As well as Fiji and a lot of other small island states. I think at least either us or the Kiwis should change.

Personally, I'd prefer to see a green and gold flag - simply because our sporting teams wear green and gold and the only place where I think displays of "patriotism" are appropriate is at sporting events. Either way it is not a big issue. I would hate for Aus. to become like the USA where people always seems to get so excited by a silly bit of rag.

Same with the Republicanism issue too really. Our sysem works pretty well - there is no need to change it. Sure, it would be nice if our titular Head of State was an Australian and not some inbred foreign fool that has never worked a day in their life - but, whatever - it isn't a big issue.

I would be very much against an elected President. We have enough polititians. We don't need yet one more clown thinking he has a mandate to do something or other.

I was with you all the way then you had to go and call the Queen an inbred foreign fool bit of a silly stereotype a bit like me calling all Australians sheep shagging convicts .

To be fair, she is foreign to the Australians. And slightly inbred (though far less so than her father or grandfather, as her mother was not a royal). Fool of course is subjective, though I would completely disagree. And I imagine that Hawk23 was unaware that the Queen was a mechanic during WW2.

But anyway, I agree with Hawk that what matters is what works. If the Australian system works, keep it. I agree also that Presidents are not a good idea. I think it's important that the person who runs the country has someone above them, even if they are only a symbol. It reduces their arrogance.
