Is it not possible to retain the Queen as Head of State and have a democratically accountable Attorney General ?

Of course it is, but why should we? Britain's reign over the world is over and seriously, we should move on. We don't have to break ties and it wouldn't be the end of the world, but we are really no longer a colony, we are a country.

Wasn't there a vote...

or a referendum or some kind of poll some years ago?
I'm not an expert about Ozland but I think to recall that Australians wanted to keep "the/their" queen?
Now, as it really doesn't change anything and if some kind of majority wants to keep things as is... what's the big deal?

In order to preserve British colonial status in Australia Howard cheated and misled Australian public during last referendum forcing people only to face dilemma between British monarch (Australian monarch was out of equation) and republic.
He did his best to present himself as Australian patriot but in fact he was and still is hard line colonial British Anglo nationalist.

Absolutely, the people of Australia should make the decision but having the Queen as Head of State does not make Australia a colony . Elect a President which half the country will probably loathe ....change the flag to green and gold stick a kangaroo on it sounds a bit like change for changes sake to me. A countries history and roots should be cherished not ditched on a passing whim . Australia is a successful proud and vibrant country if it ain't broke why fix it ?

Unfortunately , in seventies Mr. G. Whitlam as a prime minister, was sect by British monarch for not serving enough British interest in his country Australia.
Sorry, my mistake! I always thought he could not get supply through the Senate; the Governor-General asked him to hold an election, which Whitlam refused, so the G-G SACKED him and asked another person to form a government on the condition that an election was held immediately.
Gough's cry of "maintain the rage!" scared so many middle of the road voters that he lost the election.
