I'm a gweilo, aka a white ghost, foreign devil, red haired foreign devil with green eyes... whatever description suits you. In Chinese [mandarin] I would be called a Lao wai which means a "nice" foreigner. Gweilo is not Mandarin but Cantonese... and I insist for the sake of our Lib Sailor:
it's not [no longer] an insult.
"Delay no more" or better in its Canto pronounciation, now, that's a great insult, although not a racially motivated one. (for those who understand). I'm not going to translate it because of the fact that too many young kids are reading/posting here.
Parental control and stuff, you know.

A lot of Chinese hate Japanese although the reason is not based on race. Quite a few also think lowly of Koreans and Indians (again, not because of race, obviously). Koreans are claiming some culture of China as their own but Indians I'm not sure way. There's a deragatory word for people from most well-known countries (like chinks, krauts, etc), but generally foreigners are just called "foreign ghosts" or simply "ghosts". (Yan Gui Zi, Gui Zi) Japanese are called Japanese Ghosts (Ri Ben Gui Zi) or Short Slaves (Ai Nuu) since Japanese are generally perceived as short people.

I would say that what has most alarmed me recently has been the amount of Chinese nationalists that I saw on this forum. That shows me that the US is digging its own grave by having these free trade deals with China. It may very well be too late for us, since our factories are already in China. I guess we can't do anything about it. Things will likely stay the way they are. If we're smart, we'll try to start reversing the trend, if only for the reason of levelling out our trade balance.

Thanks to capitalism.

Thanks for the first part of your comment but I don't quite understand the last part of it could you please elaborate? Does it mean there's something better than capitalism (I suppose both for China and the US) and if so what should we do exactly?

I am just saying the strong belief of capitalism has made lots of Americans (generally, the corporations) put profits above all else.

And what exactly is the point of business if not profits ? loss? More profit for companies usually means that those companies expand, hire more employees, wages may increase, there is most likely shareholders who make a profit also.....where is the bad in this? I can never understand why some people have it in their heads that economic prosperity is a bad thing.

I was not aware that it was no longer an insult, if this is true, I stand corrected. I still hold that China has a history of xenephobia though.

I didn't say or even implied economic prosperity is a bad thing. I am saying in a capitalism society people are raised to put profits above all else, sometimes even think that's the only thing that matters.
Yes, more profits mean more employees and higher wages, but also how do you make more profits out of hiring more people? You outsource. Factories are built overseas and foreign workers are hired. U.S. economy is focused on selling services and instead of manufacturing goods for export.

I know you're just saying but again I'm sorry does it mean you have your own solution to capitalism?

I'm hearing one person say 'why don't these nationalists go back to China,' and 'I think Chinese people hate blacks' and terms of 'whiteghost,' 'blackghost', etc... are the type of statements of why I think some people here are ignorant and truly doesn't know much about the Chinese culture. Worse of all, one of the statments was made by a moderator. I'm sure if I started a thread about why black people are this or that, I'm sure that the thread will be closed.
If you must know why Chinese become 'nationalists' is best described in this article.
China's nationalism shows nation connected but wary | Special Coverage | Reuters
The reason for the Chinese become Nationalists is because of the Free Tibet movement threatens the soverignity of China and the Olympics, which the Chinese are looking foward to. Many Chinese and people who know China watch BBC, CNN, etc... watch the news and you hear words, China sucks because of its human rights record or they don't deserve the olympics, china likes to live in their own filth. It is not just an attack China as a nation, it is an attack on the identity of the Chinese people. Why shouldn't we be pissed? The worst thing is that this kind of China Bashing is accepted in Western Culture and none of you think it is offensive. It is really sad that most of you know China's culture is by watching Western Media.

I think alot of people here are confused when they are talking about the Chinese government and the Chinese people. IE it is okay to say "China is one of the most polluted nations" but not okay to say, "The Chinese people likes to live in their own pollution." Another okay, "China has a human rights issue with its one child policy" but not okay, "Chinese people like to kill their own babies." Why do you think Chinese people are so pissed off at what Jack Cafferty said?
Even the title "Observation On People's Attitude" is talking about Chinese people and some people here are offended by it. I hope the moderator keeps this in mind.
