Arrow Australia's Flag & Anthem

Not long ago I heard that AusFlag has just hired some major figure in advertising to promote the cause of a new flag for Australia now that the government has been replaced.

Just the other day, on GoPetition.com I found a petition suggesting that Land Down Under should be the new national anthem and another suggesting that I Am Australian should replace Advance Australia Fair because it's "Girt by a sea of mediocrity".

So what do other Australians think about these ideas?

(Note: As I'm new here and don't know if I'm allowed to post links to AusFlag and the two petitions mentioned I have not done so. If I'm allowed to please let me know and I will but please don't say I am if I'm not. Thanks mates.)

i've always thought that most australians must be pissed off having the UK flag in the corner of theirs bearing in mind the rivalry when it comes to cricket.

i would love to see the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal flag. The National Anthem? hell hardly any of us truly know it ='s mumbling along to lines here & there. Maybe reconstruct it to embrace the now & place emphasis on equality of cultures.

I think we need a new flag, one that recognises Indigenous people. Personally I like this design:

The national anthem is stuffy and boring, but so are all the other countries' anthems. Having a pop song like Land Down Under or I am Australian would e cool for a while, but it would make us the laughing stock of the planet.

Well, i like our anthem personally, but i agree with Weasel that we do have to add some recognition of the aboriginals.

And BTW, you can add links to the sites, it's only if you promote the site by starting threads about them that you'll get in trouble.

I like "Advance Australia Fair" as an anthem I also like "I am Australian". "Land Down Under" is a pop song and is only a reflection of a select few.
The flag needs the Union Jack removed, I'm not sure what it should be replaced with, maybe the aboriginal flag.
It always makes me angry to see a state flag which removes the part of our current flag that makes it Australian, to insert the state emblem, but the Union Jack remains.

I have no idea what the Australian Nation Anthem
sounds like, but everyone in the entire world knows
what the great song Waltzing Matilda sounds like.
It is one of the most loved and identifiable songs
of all time. Why not it?

As for the flag, the kangaroo is more a symbol of Australia
than any other animal is of any other country.

Put a Roo in the middle of the flag to start with.

Good idea! Next time we win a gold medal at the Olympics - we'll sing a song about a suicidal sheep stealer. Sounds good to me!

Nah..I would prefer Thorpey's "Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy" as the anthem.

And why do we have to have a flag anyway? Let's just get rid of it altogether. I am really starting to hate Australia Day, seeing every bogan and his dog waving bloody flags from their cars and houses and whatever. Seriously - go to the USA if you want to do that crap. Flag waving is a very bad look.

At the time of the anthem competition, we were asked to consider the TUNE and not the words of W-M. Then, when people expressed support for it, we were told "Oh, yeah, stand round at a state funeral singing about jumbucks and swaggies!". Not, of course, as stated in the original choice, but those who like the AAF song (tune from Cornwall, I think) would do anything to win!

I recon our current flag is great, if we become a republic then the whole thing must go or atlesat the union jack.
In my opinion the union jack and the stars and stripes flag of UK and the US are... noisy, lacks "white space".
Our flag has recognition to the UK, has the southern cross which is a bloody big deal, it is not just a random collection of stars. finaly it has the seven pointed star which represents the seven states of Australia under the unionjack. (there is 8 but the ACT dosent really count much)

So the australian flag actually means more symoblicly then the UK or US flag. Between them the only symbolic thing about them is the number of stars on the US flag represents the number of states.
