I'm guessing the reason that the KMT lost in Kaoshing is that the Hakka live in the South and the Hakka have less attachment with China than do other ethnic groups of Taiwanese who live in the North

what's difference between the provincial Taiwanese(blue) and native Taiwanese?you know the difference is provincial Taiwanese went to Taiwan after Japanese surrender to the ROC Governement in 1945;
Native Taiwanese went to Taiwan in Ming Dynasty,Qing Dynasty,for example,in late Ming Dynasty,Manchu Chinese over the Great wall and beat Han Chinese,took Bei Jing to establish Qing Dynasty,one Ming General Zhen Chengong escaped Mainland and went to Taiwan,in that year,he beat Dutch and kick them out of Taiwan.at last,his son surrendered to Manchu Chinese's Qing Dynasty.so,i think you know Native Taiwanese's source.
there were about 600,000(another number is more than 1,000,000) went to Taiwan with KMT(the ROC Government) in 1949,they were come from every province.you know this history very clearly.Taipei is the capital,so most provincial Taiwanese still live in Taipei.you know,they support KMT,they are loyal to KMT and other blue party.so you know KMT is easy win election in Taipei.
Kaoshing is different Taipei,this is DPP's base.you know this very well,for example,last month,some Anti-Chen people were attacked in Kaoshing. but i think everybody knows.DPP good at election,it is not good at economy,and not every native Taiwanese support DPP,they cast votes for DPP just because KMT was a corruption party.
