US-India Nuke Deal A Go

The landmark India-US nuclear deal is poised to clear the last hurdle with the Senate and the House conferees reporting success in breaking a logjam over a compromise enabling legislation.

The conferees, appointed by the two chambers to evolve a formula that would not only reconcile their differing versions but also substantially address New Delhi's concerns over the final bill, tabled their report in the House at 3.27 pm (1:57 am Friday

The vote to approve is approaching. Any thoughts? Will it be good for both countries?

NEW DELHI, Dec. 9 — Ask the champions of the landmark nuclear deal with India that President Bush is expected to sign into law next week why only that country will be allowed into the world’s nuclear club while others are denied, and a common reason you will hear is this: unlike those others, India will be a responsible nuclear citizen.

But beyond simple good will, unique commercial and strategic imperatives have driven a bipartisan swell of support for the deal, even though New Delhi steadfastly rejects the global nonproliferation treaty and advances a nuclear weapons program

Why is India important to join the nuke club? Some interesting thoughts.

After signing the document that turned the US-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act of 2006 into law on Monday, US President George W Bush issued a statement saying, "The Act will strengthen the strategic relationship between the US and India, and deliver valuable benefits to both nations." About the Act’s controversial Section 103, he said, significantly, "The executive branch shall construe such policy statements as advisory."

That section says the US should try to work with other Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) members to deny India enrichment, reprocessing and heavy-water technology. It has several provisions which New Delhi is not particularly happy about
