Cuba might never become a super power but when they had Che running around causing havoc around the world, they had a voice on the world stage.

My 2 cents.
Haven't you heard of the Toyota Production System, a system developed in Japan that utilises the full potential of its employees, its not how many you have, but how you use them.

Britain has a population of 60 million, 1 in 100 of the World's population. In 1800, it had a population of 9 million, out of the world's 978 million, again 1 in 100 of the World's population. Today Britain is influential, but not incredibly so. It rules itself, Northern Ireland, and a few insignificant bits of rock. In 1800, it ruled about a quarter of the world's people, about a fifth of the world's landmass, and had a great deal of control and influence over a lot more people and territory.
As Kazikli Bey points out, it's not just how many people you have.

i agree... yeah, i also don't think that the nation's potential to become a super power relies heavily on how many you have but on how potent they are. god knows maybe japan will have robosoldiers in the near future to compensate their lack of manpower. let's not also forget the ability of the nation to influence other nations worldview is as also important as military might - w/o that, you are highly likely to be isolated by the less powerful nations(the fight is not always in the battlefield).

Do British people in general miss the good old days? What do you think is the secret of British success??

China:
Chinese people, at least Han people, have little interest in the rest of the world. This is also proved in the history. In my opinion, most Chinese people would be happy to see America be the global cop, as long as Chinese interests are fairly considered. Most Chinese have no interest at all to fight with others for hegemony in remote places. Just compare Chinese history and European history.

India:
India is the most submissive to western civilization. EuroAmerican countries are finally beginning to feed India as they fed Japan, South Korea, HongKong, Taiwan and Singapore. There are two problems. India will have to be more submissive to EuroAmerica in order to get the food, which Hindu Nationalists don't like so much. Also, India is very large, which might impose a much heavier burden for western countries to feed it.

Japan:
Japan already reaches its potential except the American suppression part. They want to set up a America-Japan-Australia-India alliance to confront China. However, America is much less nervous about China than Japan; Australia is one of the major suppliers to China; Indian politics is traditionally left wing......

nothing will change for quite some time. china has too many people and it can't even control its own territories, russia's population won't go to war again, brazil is in a region where it is too hard to become a world power.

As opposed to the US? Both countries are surrounded by water on both sides, i can hardly see how it makes a difference where your country is located, especially today where aircraft makes long distance journey's take a relatively short time.
