The peace deal looks promising......
KATHMANDU: Nepal on Monday approved a new temporary constitution to bring former rebel Maoists into an interim parliament and strip the king of his executive powers, bringing an end to a decade of civil war.
The new 303-seat parliament, with 83 former rebel members, was due to be sworn in and meet for the first time later on Monday, nearly nine months after the Maoists and the government reached a ceasefire deal. Parliament’s unanimous vote in favour of the constitution was hailed by a minister in the alliance that has governed since King Gyanendra abandoned direct rule in April 2006.
“The interim constitution will be in favour of the people of Nepal and has mentioned that executive power ultimately rests with the people,” said Narendra Bikram Nemwang, the law minister, who spoke on behalf of elderly Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, who was not present at Monday’s session.

Maybe the people of Nepal will be the winners after all.

Supposedly, for democracy, but then that has always been the shout of those who want and seek power.

Another good sign for a lasting peace.
The leader of Nepal's Maoists has formally announced that the parallel government set up by the rebels during their insurgency has been dissolved.
The declaration was made by the Maoist leader, Prachanda, on Thursday.
Correspondents say abolishing the Maoist administration which holds sway over large areas of rural Nepal is one of the key steps in the peace process

Rural unrest appears to be threatening the fragile peace agreement.
KATHMANDU (AFP) - Police in southeastern Nepal fired warning shots above the heads of protesters they said were trying to storm a police post as violence in the impoverished area went into its third day.
"Police had to open fire after protesters pelted stones and tried to barge into a police post," said a police official in Lahan Bazaar, a town in the Terai region about 350 kilometres (225 miles) southeast of Kathmandu.
A local human rights worker told AFP the police shot above people's heads and used teargas.

To destroy the power of the King and make Nepal a democratic secular state.
Which has been done, so that's why they're dissolving.

To impose a Communist dictatorship, duh.
The pro-democracy shtick is how they gain popular support. This is not new, we've seen it a hundred times before.
As for the deal, it's a truce, not peace. As long as the Maoists have bases and arms, they can renew the fighting when the odds are better for them. Another one from the old playbook.

I can definately see the leaders think that, but leaders cannot fight wars. Insurgencies of this nature are fuelled by belief. The leaders may want power, the troops joined up because they hated the King and what he did. Now he's been overthrown, why should they fight?
