Pakistan's Leader

What would happen if the leader gets whacked?

INSIDE Washington, the frustration of doing business with Pakistan’s president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, is matched only by the fear of living life without him.

For years, the notion that Mr. Musharraf is all that stands between Washington and a group of nuclear-armed mullahs has dictated just how far the White House feels it can push him to root out Al Qaeda and Taliban operatives who enjoy a relatively safe existence in Pakistan.

The specter of Islamic radicals overthrowing Mr. Musharraf has also limited the Bush administration’s policy options, taking off the table any ideas about American military strikes against a resurgent Al Qaeda, which has camps in Pakistani tribal are

This is certainly a problem, the country has been run by Islamists before. They could probably won an election.

However, a man does not rule alone. Musharraf is supported by the militiary. If he dies, there may be chaos and the Islamists take over, or he may simply be replaced by another general. Which it is, depends a lot on circumstances.

Well, in poor muslim countries democracy and modernity are generally opposite subjects ... Pakistan need a modern minded authoritarian rule for decades long before democracy...

Most people in the "west" have a very biased, media propaganda based, totally wrong image about Pakistan.
Surprisingly most people generally think Pakistan is some "uncivilized, wild, uneducated country with lots of beggars and terrorists".
All good events, happenings, people are seldom shown in any news. And the "civilized" people somehow only seem to believe what they see on their TV.
As far the leader of Pakistan is concerned it all depends....
Long live Musharraf....

Oh really? How do you know how western people view Pakistan?

I don't think we view Pakistan that way at all. We view Pakistan as having a President who is our ally, but having many people who are also sympathetic to Bin Laden and his ideology. The whole "uncivilized, uneducated beggars" bit is actually a stereotype and biased in itself. Saying that Westerners are racist and ignorant in general is bias too.

You state that the West views Pakistans as "uncivilized, uneducated beggars." What fact or evidence is that comment based on?

OK, well it seems we are moving past that statement. So let's get back on topic. What direction do you see Pakistan moving in? How do you feel about it's political stability and economic growth?
