I lived in China back in the early 90s, the people were very nice, always laughing. But, they were by our standards, very bad-mannered. Not intentionally, but because things westerners considered bad manners were not considered bad manners in China.
As to the government... they're a bunch of dictators. But they've keyed onto something very important: the best way to preserve their power is to increase the standard of living for the Chinese people, and keep them reasonably happening.

I like the people and the culture, but I don't really like the government. But then again I'm not too keen on my own government so I don't guess I can really criticize.

I don't understand why you say it is ill-mannered to use China's currency in one's signature.

Well, I have not lived in China.
My theory on foreign countries is that they all behave in a similar way. All leaders of all countries want to stay in power and they will do things (i.e. invade other countries) to maintain their popularity.
I think that China is like any other country. I think it is very poor how China support countries like Sudan. I think it is dishonest how China and some Chinese claim some principle of "respecting state sovereignty" when really they just don't give a crap about people dying in Africa and giving money to dictators who kill them, just so long as China gets raw materials out of the deal.
Other than that, I think China is a rising star and her power will be as big or as large as the US' some day, in terms of economic and military power. Whether or not this happens, depends on China avoiding a war with Taiwan in the near future, and Taiwan not declaring independence.

I think you are rather overestimating the politicisation of the Chinese. They're some of the least politicised people in the world: most Chinese will have no opinion on, say, government support for African dictators. They probably won't know where Sudan is, or anything about it.
Secondly, it is a country run by a dictatorship. If you don't like the government and what it does, you don't tell people. We lived at a university campus, and this was in '91. They had students who were killed by the government at Tianamen square.
They told us that this was good, that the students had started it, and the soldiers were just protecting people from the evil students. These proffessors had their students murdered, and they told us it was good. Because you DON'T tell people you dislike the government.
Of course, they are not as bad now... but I think people are still scared. It wasn't that long ago that the government virtually wiped out one of the world's largest religions.

Spitting, children defecating or urinating in public, and staring at us. People used to point at us and take pictures of my sister (because she was blonde) without talking to us. To them it was perfectly normal, to us extremely rude.

Well, I'm sure you've run across your share of Chinese nationalists on IAP. Chinese nationalists always say that other countries should respect the hallowed principle of state sovereignty (whether or not they are butchering the population is irrelevant, apparently). So I guess Chinese nationalists have a disproportionately loud voice on the internet.
I know that more than half the Chinese population are peasants, and many of the rest are people who have no education and work in coal mines, sweat shops and construction. They probably would be more concerned with survival and not know anything about global politics.

I think that the elimination of the Falun Gong was unfortunate, but I wouldn't say they were "wiped out." I'd say they were suppressed. The Falun Gong was powerful and had the potential to ignite a rebellion against the CCP. Look at Communism and Russia. Did it ever wipe out Russian Othodox Christianity? Falun Gong still lives and it will be back someday.

Hmmm, perhaps things have changed with more modern times. But then again I haven't lived there.
