Chinese scientists should be ashamed

Bird-brained Chinese scientists learn to fly pigeons 1 hour, 58 minutes ago

BEIJING (Reuters) - Scientists in eastern China say they have succeeded in controlling the flight of pigeons with micro electrodes planted in their brains, state media reported on Tuesday.

Scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Centre at Shandong University of Science and Technology said ther electrodes could command them to fly right or left or up or down, Xinhua news agency said.

"The implants stimulate different areas of the pigeon's brain according to signals sent by the scientists via computer, and force the bird to comply with their commands," Xinhua said.

"It's the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world," Xinhua quoted the centre's chief scientist, Su Xuecheng, as saying.

Su and his colleagues, who Xinhua said had had similar success with mice in 2005, were improving the devices used in the experiment and hoped that the technology could be put into practical use in future.

The report did not specify what practical uses the scientists saw for the remote-controlled pigeons.

So because some random people you call the "western world" "laugh at Chinese" that makes it OK to be cruel to animals?

This regime has killed 60 million Chinese since it took power. But since there's economic good times, no problem. I doubt many Chinese will lose sleep over killing pigeons. THey don't lose much sleep over killing Tibetans or students in Tianamen Square either.

Man, they are pigeons. They are fed up to be Guinea pigs. The meaning of their lives are for the progress of science and technology. American scientists also do various experiments on animals.

Btw, why would the implantations be harmful in the long run??

So they have remote control pigeons now? Oh man, I know what they are up to. Just think, if a country had a remote control pigeon, ..... and they give that pigeon the bird flu...... and they can fly it anywhere.....

Thats an alibi arguement. Or do you have no idea of what scientists also in the US and Europe as in the whole world do routinely do to animals? Especially those where it is supposed that they have not so high mental capabilities? Manipulating the senses of birds is the lesser evil.

Its perhaps the idea behind that experiment you dislike. I would be not sure however the US does not try exactly the same in secret as well. Or perhaps soon officially.

Its actually not that funny.
Thats the first step to the manipulation of the brain of an animal. In case of a bird, this could have huge potential for super hidden spy capabilities, but if you think further, in the future this might not be restricted to birds. First come mammals, well, and then in the end a special variant of mammals. Those on two feet.

I would be very cautious with laughing about the developement. Fear would be the more adequate feeling.
