Pakistan army destroys al-Qaida hideouts

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan troops destroyed three suspected al-Qaida hideouts near the Afghan border, killing several members of the terror group, the army said Tuesday. The military carried out the operation in South Waziristan tribal region after receiving information that 25 to 30 al-Qaida members were hiding there, said army spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan.

"We believed several of them were killed, but we don't have a body count," he said. Sultan said some of terror group members at the sites were foreigners, but "no high-value target was believed to be there."

Sultan said the destroyed al-Qaida hideouts were located in an isolated area near the village of Zaoola, located in the general area where the government in September had signed a controversial peace deal with tribal elders to halt military operations against militants.

In return, the local militants and tribal elders at the time had promised that they would neither shelter any foreign militants, nor they would target Pakistani security forces and pro-government elders. But the government has not signed any such deal in South Waziristan, where the military has carried out scores of operations against al-Qaida and their local supporters after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

Pakistan, a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, has deployed about 80,000 troops in its tribal regions, mostly in North and South Waziristan in an effort to flush out militants.

His news conference.

RAWALPINDI, Jan 16: President General Pervez Musharraf has said that any hideout or sanctuary being used by terrorists or miscreants will be knocked out wherever found. He was speaking at the 100th Corps Commanders’ Conference at the General Headquarters here on Tuesday.

The two-day conference was attended by the vice chief of army staff, corps commanders and principal staff officers.

The president dwelt at length on the international and regional environment and its relevance to the security of Pakistan.

“Terrorism is a threat to national security which will be eliminated at all costs, and Pakistan will not allow anyone to use its soil for terrorist activities,” he said.

He rejected statements emanating from various quarters alleging that Pakistan was fighting terrorism under any pressure.

The participants of the conference reviewed the four-pronged strategy being followed in Fata. They also decided to continue to pursue measures to curb extremism and terrorism through a political process, and to take military action to deal with illegal border crossing and terrorists sheltering on the Pakistan side.

The president also briefed the participants on the ongoing Pakistan-India peace process.

Expressing optimism and hope in the process, he said the resolution of the Kashmir dispute was essential for achieving durable peace in the region. He also expressed satisfaction on the progress over Sir Creek and Siachin issues.—APP

Pervez is trying to do his "part" or is he?

While President Bush is pressing Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to crack down on the Shiite militias that are spreading death and destruction in Iraq, there's no evidence of similar pressure being exerted on Pakistan's leader, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to step up efforts against Taliban militants.

But why? The Taliban are gathering strength along the border with Afghanistan, perhaps with the encouragement of the Pakistani government, as cited in a Sunday article in The New York Times. Some Western diplomats in Pakistan and Afghanistan accuse Pakistani intelligence agencies of supporting the Taliban, and suggest that Pakistan may even be sponsoring them. Moreover, the rising number of Taliban attacks against U.S. and NATO forces suggests not only that the Taliban are gaining strength, but that they also have access to supplies and intelligence necessary to sustain an insurgency.
