Depends on how you meant "Can't". . .The political will power to do it was not there, the commander of our forces at the time asked for the right to full out destroy communist china. He was rebuffed and eventually fired over the whole deal . .by President Truman. . .So yea the military might was there but Americans and more importantly Truman was burnt out on wars at the time.

Macarthur, our commander of armed forces in the pacific at the time eventually was fired for his rhetoric to invade china. . .

We, with a draft, could still school china, though the attrition would be horrible after displacing the Communist government. This is actually more true now then it was in the 1950s.

Our government represents us, at least fairly closely as a whole. Whatever people may say here now, many here backed Iraq as I did 03'. So relax its unlikely we even do Iran though a case can be made even now for it.
