Everyone in the world outside of North Korea has food, shelter, commodities because of the free market. Unless of course you grow your own food, build your own house, make your own clothes, build your own car, write your own newspaper.....

By the time Indonesians have the technology for that, the other nations probably have already built giant lasers on Jupiter. And made contact with aliens.

So if you use an idea you pick up here will you give the originator a cut of your earnings?
It doesn't take much imagination to think of possible reasons for a US occupation in Indonesia. As of now they'd not be very plausible, but since your story is in 20 years time...
Perhaps your next story could have Belgian troops in occupation of Thailand - that might exercise the imagination a bit more!

So… possible reasons for US troops in occupation of Indonesia:
* Indonesia takes a turn towards Islamic extremism, sponsors terrorist groups (IJ, AQ or something new), hence Afghanistan Mk II – US attack & occupation.
* Indonesia discovers lots of oil, world resources depleted elsewhere, so US makes grab.
* Another Indonesian resource (eg metals) becomes extremely valuable, hence grab as above.
* Religious conflict between Indonesian muslims and Christians; fundy US President intervenes to protect Xtians from elimination.
* Civil war in Indonesia; UN Sec Council crippled by politics, so US intervenes unilaterally & sends peacekeeping troops (civil war could internal & spontaneous, or engineered by US or other country).
* War between Indonesia and Australia (eg Timor? N Guinea? Something else?); US intervenes on Aussie side.
* Large scale east asian war, with many countries involved. US winds up on winning side.
* Washington DC bombarded by iota rays from the Planet Zarg, causing brain melt in successive Administrations that leads the US into an insane policy of invasion against countries beginning with the letter “I”. Following the conquest of Iraq (2003) and Iran (2009) Indonesia is next in the reverse alphabetical sequence required under the Masonic rules of the Bilderberg Group.

I'll put that to consideration. Seriously. In about 5 years I reckon I'll earn 5.00 dollars, which gives you the right for approximately 5 cents.

I was actually planning a sequel which involves a nuclear war between Sealand and the Aerican Empire.

Brilliant. Just golden. I can already see us being famous with this idea, mr. Mikado. Just imagine how many press conferences (and therapy sessions) we'll have to attend if such story gets to print.
Overall, thanks very much for the insight. I guess one of those scenarios (or some of them mixed together) can make a good story. Thanks again!

They have private markets in the developing world also. Trade is always present.
If the people refuse the deal, then it doesn't go through.

Well I did enjoy reading some of the crazy comments on this one.
As I mentioned on another thread I'm a British bloke (Yes a real Brit not a pakistanni with a UK passport) living in Indonesia.
Just to make it clear - yes, I am a muslim.
Indonesia has a fairly good government that is freely elected.
It has some extreme Islamic nutters but not that many. The Bali bombs were planned and run my Malay nationals but locals took the front line.
Most people here tend to look west and are not anti US but are anti US foreign policy. You would be amazed at how many stars and stripes you see painted on commercial vehicles as well as many British union flags.
If you want to make friends here it's easy. Give the people a helping hand while asking for nothing in return. If you want to make the exremists stonger invade the place and end up with another Iraq.
There is quite a lot of oil and gas here but I'm not sure that there is enough to bother pinching.
The only way Indonesia would turn to extremism is if there was a kick to make it. A US invasion (Unlikely as it is) would do just that.
The US has the chance to make friends here if only it would change it's attitude.
