What's happening in China

Chinese media, marketing, advertising, and urban life - Danwei
This site is run by a bunch of gweilos in China, with front page stories from Chinese media translated everyday. So if you're interested in what's happening in modern China, this might be a good source.

EastSouthWestNorth Blog
This is another one, run by Chinese though. Besides news articles, there are translated blog posts as well.

No, it's not. At least, not anymore. All my gweilo friends call themselves that. In the north, it's laowai.

Westerner and waiguoren are too formal for casual chitchats.

I've never seen laowai as similar at all to gweilo.
Laowai is a lot more respectful.
It'll be strange if in Canada we would call anybody a foreigner, or an old outsider, or a white ghost.....
