In my personal opinion, I think Taiwan has been separated from China for a rather long time, elders in Taiwan are those whose escaped from China in the civil war, they want Taiwan to return to China, but the young people in Taiwan may not think that, separatism is popular in Taiwan! But you should know the strategic position of Taiwan is very very important, China will never allow Tawan to be indenpendent, I know if the war started, China would face the western economic punishment, but no matter what happens, China will stop Taiwan's indenpendence by force, and China will also take the risk of fighting with US and Japan.

This is stupid. You don't need Taiwan to belong in your self-declared territory. It' of none strategic importance right now, considering the PLA isn't in Taiwan and wouldn't even be welcomed there in case of a war. Strategy for what? Another war against Japan? I call propaganda on that one.
Taiwan as a territorial claim has no value other than ego. The CCP won't let go of it because of some dumb Qin Dynasty ideology and the fact that it never goes back on its word (as if the CCP needed to assure its infallibility to prove its strength). I thought Chinese people valued economic growth foremost. Invading Taiwan would NOT be a smart economic move. It will be much better to trade with Taiwan.
Plus the US wouldn't attack China in the event of invasion.

Now can someone explain to me what the US has to do with this? Why does it maintain an alliance (in theory, anyway) with a terrority that has no strategic interest - it's not like they're going to go and ally themselves with North Korea if we don't give them the proper attention - at the expense of relations with a country (China) with which we have many complex and important problems? Couldn't it get more results by simply flipping on this issue entirely?

The US doesn't have an alliance with Taiwan. While it might supply it with some minor weapons in the event of a war, it will not intervene. It has made this very clear since the 1960's.
The US came into the picture because of old almost forgotten traditions following the Trueman Doctrine.

Also, the US is seen as somewhat involved since it, amongst many foreign nation, has supported and financed the Kuomingtang's army during the Chinese civil war. Although it has renounced to all military aid to the latter since the Sino-Soviet Split.

More like the other way around. The KMT on Taiwan has always been the legitimate successor of the Qing Dynasty since 1911. The CCP communists are just lucky that Japan invaded in Sino-Japanese Wars 1 & 2, weakening the nationalists so the communists could defeat the nationalists in 1949.
Mao Zedong himself said "Our determined policy is 70% self-development, 20% compromise, and 10% fight the Japanese."
So it's ironic he's seen as the "great patriot" who fought off the Japanese invasion when in reality the KMT nationalists did most of the work.

Oh no, don't start this whole legitimacy contingency. No such thing as legitimate. What would it even mean? The KMT is more legitimate because Sun Zhong Shan convinced Yuan Shi Kai to hand over power? I guess Yuan Shi Kai was the all determining light of legitimacy in this world and beyond.......

For China, Taiwan has a very big electronic industry, and it would mean a lot to the Chinese. It isn't strategic for the USA, but Taiwan buy lots of arms from USA, and of course, the USA would make a profit.

No, actually, the CCP did a lot of fighting, and was more effective against the Japanese then what they Kuomintang was.
