No more Us troops in Africa
US: No garrisons in Africa: Africa: News: News24
This is a worry for manyAfricans, as a lot of us remember the bad old days of the Cold War, when Africa was used as a battle ground for proxy wars, and nobody wants that again. If what the General is saying is correct, it is not so bad, although I still don't know why it is needed. What if SA suddenly decided we needed the North American Military command, and open one in Pittsburg?
But anyhow, it is done

You can tell it's aimed at possible Islamist groups, at areas like Somalia and Eritrea. I doubt it will do much in the south.

Oh, we know the south will not be affectec, but Africa is one continent. The AU is the representativegroup of this continent, and Sa is the most powerfull country in the AU (with Nigeria). Further more weare all ready being overrun by refugess from the north.
So what affects the Horn, affects us in the South.

The AU HQ can be moved.
In reality they will not have that big a foot print on the continent and are hunting Islamic radicals. I wish there were more U.S. troops to provide security and stop the fighting on the horn, but that won't happen.
This could also send a signal to China not to think about putting troops on the continent in strategic oil areas.

Sorry, why should the AU HQ be moved?

I don't quite understand the consern. Many times if the UN or the AU needs assistance, military or otherwise, from the US it has to come all the way from Europe. This would be a more effective and efficent way to tap into American aid.
Besides why you are so worried about US troops while there are already Chinese troops in Sudan?

Isthee, I am not aware of this. But that will then fuel the concern, because Africans do not want to be the battle gorund in a new cold war.
And what the AU needs more than anything else, is training, not US troops on the ground, and for training, I do not think a HQ necesary.
Ps. Do you know how many American troops are currently in africa? I wouldnot think much, as it is mostly European and Asian blue helmets in Africa, and then ofcourse a ot of green helmets.

I am unsure of the numbers of personnel that are currenlty in Africa or being sent to Africa but the idea of a large scale unit is unlikely. The personnel would be mostly made up of support and logistics staff and just enough combat personnel for defense.
Most likely the entire command would comprise of one or two facilities that were in control or in close proximity to a air field.
