New Oil Reserve Found!

A new 600 million barrel field has been discovered in Ghana. Will this be a replay of Nigeria and the probs it creates?

UK firm Tullow Oil has announced the discovery of 600 million barrels of light oil offshore from Ghana.

Reserves in the Mahogany exploration well were far greater than the 250 million barrels than the firm had earlier forecast, it said.

Tullow - which saw its shares rise 10% on the news - jointly owns the West Cape block where the drilling took place with Anadarko Petroleum.

It was one of the biggest oil finds in Africa in recent times, Tullow said.

Tullow and Anadarko firms share rights to the adjacent Tano basin, which could yield more oil.

Poor Ghana. I wonder what they did to deserve this curse!

I think Ghana might be able to cope with this. Their government is, from what I understand, one of the more democratic, less corrupt governments of sub-saharan Africa. It doesn't really suffer from tribal violence.

It all depends on how Ghana is going to use the money it is going to receive from the international companies. See how the Gulf states, like Saudi-Arabia, Kuwait, Dubai are building their economy making their own people lives better.

I believe strongly Ghana can do it too. Somehow, Ghana can prove the curse can be changed into a blessing.

I hope you are right, but in the past revenue has turned liberators into depots.

It is true, as beautiful a blessing this new discovery is for Ghana, most of this wealth will flow into the pockets of a select few and they will kill, steal and destroy in search thereof.

So any guesses on how long it will be before the US goes into Ghana to try and control this reserve?
